Bio

David Cox was named Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in January 2024.

As the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Spartanburg Methodist College, Cox plays a vital role on the Athletics Administration team, overseeing all facets of the College’s compliance program to ensure alignment with NAIA rules and regulations. He is responsible for maintaining the eligibility of student-athletes and upholding the integrity of intercollegiate competition.

In this capacity, he ensures that all athletics programs remain compliant with NAIA regulations concerning recruiting, amateurism, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons, and sports camps and clinics. He manages and maintains comprehensive student-athlete files, ensuring all documentation is up to date and preserved in accordance with institutional policy. Additionally, Cox oversees the compliance policy and procedures manual and communicates vital updates to athletics staff and campus stakeholders.

A key figure in regulatory matters, the Memphis, Tennessee native coordinates internal investigations of potential or confirmed rule violations and manages all related correspondence with the NAIA and affiliated conferences. He is also instrumental in delivering rules education programs to coaches, student-athletes, administrators, boosters, and community members. Cox works closely with the Athletic Academic Advisor to monitor student-athlete progress and is responsible for tracking the department’s CARA logs and recruiting spreadsheets. He also assists in overseeing the institution’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy and participates in the hiring and supervision of Athletics Department personnel.

Prior to his current role, Cox served as the head men's soccer coach at SMC beginning in 2020. Before that, he was an assistant men's soccer coach at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia, for nearly two years. He has also served as a soccer referee at various levels for the past 20 years. Cox earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and his master's degree from Arkansas State University.
