No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett swept a doubleheader from Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday, winning 26-6 in seven innings in game one and 13-0 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Grizzlies broke a 1-1 tie after the first inning and added four runs in both the second and sixth innings. The decisive blow came in the seventh, when Georgia Gwinnett erupted for 13 runs to secure the 26-6 victory. Three Grizzlies recorded three hits apiece, including Grant Pohlman, who drove in six runs.
The Pioneers were led by Lane Schrader's two-hit performance, while Elijah Franz and Kohen Bridges each drove in two runs. SMC stranded eight runners on base in the loss.
Georgia Gwinnett carried its momentum into game two, opening with a six-run first inning on the way to a 13-0 win. Five Grizzlies pitchers combined in the shutout, led by starter Peyton Castellow, who allowed no runs over three innings while striking out five to earn the win.
Trey Wendell paced the Pioneers offensively with two hits off the bench, as SMC was limited to four hits in the game.
Spartanburg Methodist will look to stay in contention for a spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament with two key series remaining. The Pioneers travel to Union Commonwealth for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
