SMC Baseball Rallies to Defeat Union Commonwealth in Series Opener
The Pioneers (20-21, 12-10 AAC) scored a pair of unearned runs and a bases-loaded walk by Dario Astudillo plated three runs in the fourth to put the visitors ahead 4-2.
The Bulldogs (6-31, 3-21) made it a one-run game in the fifth, 4-3.
SMC came back with two runs on a two-run home run by Blake Exizian in the sixth, then added to its lead with three more in the eighth. Two of the three runs in the eighth came on the first home run of the season by Hayden Lake.
The Pioneers had 12 hits in the win, with three from Jarian Pinckney to lead the offense; Pinckney also had two stolen bases. Lake, Exizian, and Tanner Martin each added two hits. SMC starting pitcher Travis Dannecker picked up his fourth win of the season after a five-inning stint. Payton Gardner pitched the final four innings for his second save of the season.
The series will wrap up with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
