Montreat, N.C. – A strong offensive performance, highlighted by 14 kills in sets one and three and 10 in set two, propelled visiting Spartanburg Methodist College to its first Appalachian Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 25-21, 25-17, 27-25 sweep of Montreat on Tuesday night.
The Pioneers (5-12, 1-4 AAC) were led by MaKinnley Smart, who recorded 13 kills. Hana Vucinic narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 13 digs and seven kills. Leilani Campbell and Braelynn Brewington each added six kills, while Kendall Meinders chipped in five.
Brook Noe contributed four service aces and 12 assists, while Tristan Craine tallied a team-high 19 assists and added a service ace. Smart and Campbell also combined for five block assists to anchor the Pioneers' defense.
The Cavaliers (0-5, 0-5 AAC) had a balanced effort in the loss, led by Josie Leatherman with eight of the team's 27 kills. Six different players registered a service ace, and the Montreat frontline finished with 10 blocks.
Spartanburg Methodist returns home to host Union Commonwealth on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. for Officials Appreciation Night, followed by a matchup against Johnson on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m.
