Campbellsville, KY – The Spartanburg Methodist College volleyball team dropped a pair of four-set decisions on the final day of the Roar and Raid Invite.
In the 17-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-16 loss to Goshen to open the day, Aurora Aho led the attack with 11 kills, while Kendall Meinders added nine. Hana Vucinic recorded seven kills and a team-best three service aces, and Braelynn Brewington contributed seven kills and four blocks. Setters Tristan Craine and Brook Noe finished with 15 and 13 assists, respectively.
SMC jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the match, prompting an early timeout by Goshen. Meinders and Aho each added two kills as the Pioneers secured the opening set. The second set was tied 12 times, including at 22, before the Maple Leafs scored the final three points to even the match at one set apiece. In the third set, Aho recorded four kills, with two each from Brewington and Vucinic, but Goshen edged ahead to take a 2-1 lead, winning the set 28-26. The Maple Leafs claimed the fourth set after eight ties, scoring six consecutive points following a Goshen service error to close out a 25-16 victory.
In the second match, SMC fell to Lindsey Wilson, 25-15, 21-25, 25-18, 25-11. The Pioneers were led by Aurora Aho with 11 kills; Tristan Craine and Brook Noe with 14 and 13 assists, respectively; and Leilani Campbell with two blocks.
The first set saw the host Blue Raiders lead from start to finish on their way to a 25-15 win. Campbell had a pair of kills in the opening set to lead the SMC attack. The second set saw the Pioneers jump out to a 6-2 lead on the strength of two kills by Meinders. SMC erased a 13-11 deficit with six straight points, including two more kills by Meinders, to tie the match at one set apiece with a 25-21 victory.
The third set saw the teams tied on three occasions, including at 8-8 on a Vucinic kill. Back-to-back points by the Blue Raiders put the home team ahead for the remainder of the set. A 5-0 run midway through the fourth set gave Lindsey Wilson the edge on their way to the victory. A Campbell service ace cut the deficit to four at 12-8 before LWU closed out the match with an 8-3 spurt.
