Spartanburg Methodist College and Carolina University split a midweek baseball doubleheader on Tuesday. The visiting Pioneers won game one by a 15–5 margin, but the nightcap saw the host Bruins rally for a 12–9 victory.
Spartanburg Methodist College (10-12) scored in every inning of the seven-inning contest in game one on its way to the 15–5 win. The Pioneers plated four runs in both the first and sixth innings. Elijah Franz had four hits to lead a 14-hit attack for the visitors, while Jarian Pinckney added two hits and a team-high four RBI. Matt Smith and Thatcher Baughman also recorded multiple hits.
Ty Harper, Baughman, and Smith each drove in two runs, while Alex Higdon pitched the final 3.1 innings of three-hit relief to earn his first win.
Game two saw SMC hold a 9–0 lead through four and a half innings before the Bruins responded with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth to complete the comeback for a 12–9 win.
Brady Jeffcoat led the SMC offense with three hits and four RBI. Nine different Pioneers scored a run, and eight different players recorded a hit in the loss.
The Bruins finished with 16 hits, with Nathan Wesley leading the offense with four hits. Four Carolina players recorded multiple hits in the win. Reliever Landon Johnson pitched 1.1 innings of two-hit relief to earn the win, while Ray Collada pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record the save.
Spartanburg Methodist returns home next for an AAC three-game series against Truett McConnell. The series begins Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m.
