Athens, TN – No. 25 Tennessee Wesleyan stretched a one-goal halftime lead into a decisive victory, scoring four times in the final 45 minutes to defeat the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
Julia Starchl, who opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 12th minute, was one of two TWU players to net a pair of goals. Teammate Natascha Frei added two of her own, striking twice in a span of just 3:15 to help seal the win.
Spartanburg Methodist (2-4-3, 0-3-2 AAC) was limited to six shots in the match, including two on goal. Emmy Douglas recorded two attempts, while Caitlin Lagos and Carolina Taylor each placed a shot on frame for the Pioneers.
Tennessee Wesleyan (5-1, 4-1 AAC) generated 32 shots in the win. Goalkeeper Ashbey Self, making her first start of the season, tallied two saves to record her first shutout.
SMC returns home for its next three matches, beginning Wednesday against Johnson (TN) at 1 p.m. at Nash Soccer Field. The Pioneers will also host Youth Day next Saturday with a noon kickoff against Pikeville.
