SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the fifth time this season, the Spartanburg Methodist College softball team swept a doubleheader, defeating Paine College 7-1 and 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers (11-1) totaled 16 hits on the day — nine in game one and seven in game two — while four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
In the opener, SMC scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings and added an insurance run to secure the 7-1 victory. Lydia Faulk led the offense with three hits, while Saleena Rollins added two. Four different players drove in a run in the win. Alex Stuckey and Adriana Stump-Frias each crossed the plate twice.
Starting pitcher Bailey Kiser earned her fifth win of the season, striking out five and scattering five hits.
In game two, Lauren Ballew delivered the big blow with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and added an RBI sacrifice fly to finish with four RBI. Ballew and Stuckey each collected two hits in the nightcap.
Starting pitcher Maddie Handy improved to 4-0, allowing two runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Kyla Quiles pitched the final two innings in relief, surrendering three hits.
Paine scored its two runs in the fifth inning. Catherine Lewis and Kayla Carter each had two hits in the loss.
SMC will next travel to the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex for five games in three days during Spring Break. The Pioneers open play Sunday, March 8, against Penn State DuBois at 10 a.m.
