SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Mother Nature washed away Spartanburg Methodist College men's soccer's original season opener on Thursday, but the Pioneers finally took the field Saturday under overcast skies against Southeastern University. The visitors from Lakeland, Florida, spoiled SMC's debut, earning a 5-0 win in their own season opener.
Spartanburg Methodist (0-1) nearly struck first in the fifth minute when newcomer Jahmarli Connor's shot sailed just high. Moments later, SEU's Miguel Londono capitalized on his own rebound from a saved penalty kick to give the Fire an early 1-0 lead.
Southeastern added two more goals before halftime to push the margin to 3-0. Despite changing goalkeepers at the break, the Fire kept up the pressure, tacking on goals in the 49th and 57th minutes to close out the scoring.
SMC generated chances late as Thomas Pineros came off the bench in the 71st minute and provided a spark. Pineros fired four shots, including an 84th-minute attempt that was turned away by the SEU keeper.
The Pioneers hit the road next to face No. 6 Mobile on Monday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
