Pioneers Dominate Home Invitational with Five Top-10 Finishes
GAFFNEY, S.C. – Five members of the Spartanburg Methodist College men's golf team placed in the top 10, including the top two finishers — Evan Cheek and AJ Bolin — at the Pioneers Fall Invitational on Tuesday.
Cheek captured the individual title for the second time this fall, firing his second straight round of 70 to finish at 140 (-4) for a two-stroke victory over Bolin.
The strong performances from Cheek and Bolin led the SMC "A" team to a commanding 19-stroke victory over runner-up Sandhills Community College, as the Pioneers finished with a team total of 578 (+2, 285-293).
Bolin, competing on his home course at Cherokee National Golf and Recreation Club in nearby Gaffney, finished runner-up at two-under par 142 (70-72). Thomas Campbell joined them on the all-tournament team with a fifth-place finish after carding back-to-back rounds of 73 for a 146 (+2).
Also contributing to the "A" team's success were newcomers Kendall Howle, who tied for 10th with a 150 (+6, 72-78), and Parker Harrigan, who tied for 40th with a 161 (+17, 78-83).
The SMC "B" squad was led by Antonio Montenora, who shared sixth place with a 149 (+5, 74-75). Andrew Walker tied for 19th at 153 (+9, 79-74), improving by five strokes in Tuesday's final round. Tucker Simon also improved by two shots for a 154 (+10, 78-76). Conner Requidan finished tied for 30th with a 156 (+12, 71-85), and Bryson Paris tied for 34th after shooting identical rounds of 79 for a 158 (+14).
The "C" team was paced by Jackson Welch, who tied for 43rd with a 164 (+20, 76-88). Lucas Johnson and Tripp Darwin followed in 49th and 50th, respectively, with scores of 168 (+24, 83-85) and 172 (+28, 88-84). Tristen Henne placed 58th with a 182 (+38, 92-90), while Andrew Coleman finished one spot behind in 59th at 184 (+40, 90-94).
Competing as individuals, Owen Jackson finished 56th (+36, 91-89) and Aaron Ritz placed 60th (+42, 94-92).
The Pioneers will conclude their fall schedule in two weeks at the AAC Preview at Barnsley Resort in Adairsville, Georgia.
