Spartanburg Methodist Men’s Golf Tied for Lead After Opening Round at Island Pointe Intercollegiate
Knoxville, Tenn. - The Spartanburg Methodist College men's golf team sent two squads to compete at the 2nd Annual Island Pointe Intercollegiate at Island Pointe Golf Club in Knoxville. After the opening round, the SMC "A" team shot a 304 (+16) to share the team lead with Maryville (TN). The "B" team carded a 318 (+30) and sits in fifth place in the 17-team field.
The "A" team is led by co-leader Evan Cheek, who fired an even-par 72 with birdies on No. 11 and No. 12. Cheek shares the individual lead with Corey Hariston of LeMoyne-Owen.
Also competing for the "A" team, Tucker Simon recorded a team-best four birdies on his way to a 76 (+4) and is currently in sixth place. Thomas Campbell sits in 14th place, one stroke behind Simon, after posting a 77 (+5). Kendall Howle added a 79 (+7) with a pair of birdies in his round. Rounding out the lineup, Antonio Montenora shot an 80 (+8) with a birdie on No. 18 and is tied for 26th place.
The "B" team is led by AJ Bolin, who recorded birdies on No. 1 and No. 16 while shooting a 76 (+4), placing him in a tie for sixth place. Teammates Bryson Paris and Parker Harrigan are tied for 20th after each posted a 79 (+7). Paris also recorded a birdie on No. 1 during his round. Jackson Welch carded an 84 (+12) and was the third Pioneer on the "B" team to record a birdie on No. 1. Andrew Walker rounded out the "B" squad lineup and recorded a birdie on the par-3 No. 8 hole.
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The Pioneers are seeking their second team title of the season, while Cheek is aiming for his third individual title.
