Bryan Uses Late Surge to Top SMC in Series Opener, 6-4
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A four-run eighth inning lifted visiting Bryan to a 6-4 win over Spartanburg Methodist College in Friday night's series opener.
Spartanburg Methodist (16-15, 9-7 AAC) recorded double-digit hits for the 16th time in 31 games, led by Jarian Pinckney and Tanner Martin with three hits apiece. Despite the offensive production, the Pioneers left 13 runners on base in the loss.
Bryan (15-16, 8-7 AAC) trailed 4-2 entering the eighth before rallying for four runs on three hits to take control. Three of those runs came with one out as the Lions completed the comeback. Caleb McCarty, Cade Cook, and Jayron Morris each collected two hits to pace Bryan's offense.
The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. Bryan turned to Ty Johnson, who battled back from a 2-0 count to record a key strikeout before finishing the game with a three-pitch strikeout to seal the win.
The series remains undecided and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a special recognition honoring longtime SMC baseball coach Tim Wallace.
