SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fueled by a spirited home crowd, the Spartanburg Methodist College volleyball team swept Montreat, 25-13, 25-13, 25-22, on Tuesday night.
Spartanburg Methodist (9-14, 4-6 AAC) posted a .268 hitting percentage for the second straight match, recording 35 kills in the win. Braelynn Brewington and Leilani Campbell led the way with eight kills each, while Hana Vucinic added seven.
The Pioneers' front line controlled the match, tallying four block solos and 14 block assists. Makinnley Smart finished with one block solo, four block assists, and five kills. Campbell contributed two block solos and four block assists, and Brewington added three block solos and one block assist.
Setters Tristan Craine and Brook Noe distributed the offense effectively with 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Vucinic nearly notched a double-double, leading the Pioneers with 10 digs in the victory.
Montreat (0-11, 0-11 AAC) was led by Elizabeth Harrington and Josie Leatherman, who tallied eight and seven kills, respectively. Cizzie Griffin paced the Cavaliers with 12 assists, four digs, and two service aces.
Next, SMC will hit the road for a pair of conference matchups, traveling to Pikeville, Kentucky, to face UPIKE on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m., before heading to Bluefield, Virginia, to take on Bluefield on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. It will mark the Pioneers' first meetings against both AAC opponents.
