Spartanburg, S.C. – A header by Rocco Cimino off a rebound in the 58th minute proved to be the difference as Union Commonwealth edged Spartanburg Methodist College, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-2-2, 5-0-2 AAC) controlled possession for much of the contest, outshooting the Pioneers 13-3 on the way to the victory. Cimino, Gasquez-Perez, and Blake each recorded three shots for Union.
The Pioneers (2-7-1, 2-5-1 AAC) were anchored by goalkeeper Francesco Molinar, who organized an aggressive defense that blocked multiple attempts and tallied five saves. SMC nearly equalized in the 85th minute when Nils Monchgesang's header off a free kick just missed.
Next up, the Pioneers hit the road for their next two contests, visiting Bluefield on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and Bryan on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
