Columbia, SC – After being one-hit in game one of the doubleheader, the Spartanburg Methodist College softball team responded with a shutout of its own in the nightcap, defeating host CIU 3-0 to split the twinbill on Thursday.
SMC (29-16, 12-14) was powered by a pair of extra-base hits from Gracie Starnes in the game two victory. The senior outfielder played a role in two of the three runs. She scored the first run of the nightcap in the opening inning when the host Rams committed a throwing error on a double steal by the Pioneers. Later, she delivered an RBI triple in the fifth inning, scoring pinch runner Saleena Rollins from second to add an insurance run.
The three runs proved to be enough support for SMC pitcher Maddie Handy, who improved to 7-5 on the season after allowing eight hits while recording her first shutout of the year.
SMC will next compete in the AAC Softball Tournament, scheduled for April 27–May 1 at the Brickyard Ball Fields in Kingsport, Tennessee. Seeding and opening-round matchups are still to be determined.
