Columbia, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play with a doubleheader split against Columbia (S.C.) on Wednesday. The Koalas claimed game one, 4–3, while the Pioneers responded with a 2–1 victory in the nightcap.
SMC (16-3, 1-1 AAC) recorded seven hits in the opener. Maddie Handy led the Pioneers with two hits, while three different players drove in runs in the loss.
Columbia (15-11, 3-7 AAC) scored the game's final four runs, highlighted by a leadoff walk-off home run from Elaina Seymour in the bottom of the seventh. Six different Koalas recorded a hit in the win.
In game two, SMC starter Kyla Quiles limited Columbia to just two hits as the Pioneers secured a 2–1 victory. SMC plated both of its runs in the second inning, while totaling nine hits in the contest. Jacie Ross led the way with three hits, and Handy added two more.
After stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, SMC broke through in the second. Josie Smythe delivered an RBI double, followed by an RBI groundout from Adriana Stump-Frias.
Quiles remained in control throughout, allowing just a single in the third inning and a solo home run in the fifth.
SMC returns home on Friday, March 20, to host Bryan for an AAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
