Late Surge Lifts Bryan Past SMC in AAC Tournament
No. 6 seed Bryan College used a late offensive surge to defeat No. 4 seed Spartanburg Methodist College, 10-3, in Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament action Thursday afternoon.
Bryan (25-23), which trailed 3-2 after three innings, evened the score in the fourth before taking control with a four-run sixth inning. The Lions added three more runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Spartanburg Methodist College (26-22), which had won six of its last seven games entering the contest, took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Dario Astudillo.
Bryan tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a solo home run before breaking it open in the sixth with a pair of two-RBI singles. The Lions continued to build momentum with three additional runs in the seventh.
The Pioneers recorded eight hits in the loss, led by Lane Schrader with two. However, Bryan's pitching staff closed the door late, retiring the final nine SMC batters in order.
Spartanburg Methodist College will face elimination Friday morning, taking on No. 1 seed Milligan at 9 a.m.
