No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett Defeats SMC, 12-2
After plating a run in the top of the first inning, a six-run fourth propelled visiting No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett to a 12-2 win over Spartanburg Methodist College in Friday night's series opener.
The Pioneers (19-19) got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Blake Exizian. Brady Jeffcoat led SMC with two of the team's five hits in the loss.
The Grizzlies (35-4), who extended their winning streak to four games, were led by Payton Fort's two-hit, four-RBI performance. Fort highlighted the six-run fourth inning with a three-run inside-the-park home run and later added an RBI double in the eighth.
For Georgia Gwinnett, Peyton Watts and Jay O'Neill each recorded two hits and scored twice. Starting pitcher Shane Anderson earned his fourth win of the season, tossing five innings with nine strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the weekend series on Saturday, April 11, with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. The twinbill will mark the final home games of the season for the Pioneers.
