Cheek Shines With 65 to Lead SMC Men’s Golf at Fincastle Intercollegiate
BLUEFIELD, Va. – Freshman Evan Cheek fired five birdies in his first collegiate round to lead the Spartanburg Methodist College men's golf team on Monday at the Fincastle Intercollegiate.
The Simpsonville, S.C., native carded birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 11, 16, and 17 en route to a 65 (-5), giving him a two-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round. His performance helped the Pioneers' "A" team post a score of 293 (+13), good for second place in the team standings. Host Bluefield leads with a 279 (-1).
Two of Cheek's teammates, Thomas Campbell and Parker Harrigan, each shot 75 (+5) to tie for 13th place. AJ Bolin followed with a 78 (+8), tied for 30th, while Kendall Howle posted an 81 (+11) to sit in a tie for 47th.
The SMC "B" team stands sixth after a 307 (+27). Leading the way was Tucker Simon, who matched Campbell and Harrigan with a 75 (+5) for a share of 13th place. Bryson Paris and Antonio Montenora each carded 77 (+7), Jackson Welch posted a 78 (+8), and Andrew Walker finished with an 85 (+15).
Campbell will be the first Pioneer to tee off Tuesday with a 9:20 a.m. start as the tournament concludes with the final 18 holes.
