Milligan Pulls Away in Second Half as SMC Falls in AAC Opener
Milligan, Tenn. – Kamari Johnson and Caroline Taylor each scored their second goals of the season, but the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team dropped its Appalachian Athletic Conference opener to host Milligan, 8-2, on Saturday.
After the Buffs struck first in the 17th minute, Johnson pulled SMC even at the 27:52 mark. Less than a minute later, Taylor gave the Pioneers – riding a two-match winning streak – a 2-1 advantage with her second tally of the season. Milligan answered in the 37th minute to send the match into halftime knotted at 2-2.
The Buffs broke the deadlock after the break, netting six second-half goals to secure the victory. Three different Milligan players – Lauren Hawkley, Natalie Roper, and Bianca Varica – each recorded a pair of goals.
SMC goalkeeper Ava Wilson recorded 10 saves while facing 33 shots in the contest.
The Pioneers return home for their AAC home opener against Columbia International University on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at Nash Soccer Field.
