Michael Torres scored in the 87th minute for the Spartanburg Methodist College men's soccer team, but the Pioneers dropped a 2-1 decision to Johnson University on Wednesday afternoon.
In a physical contest, the visiting Royals held a 17-15 edge in shots, as five cards were issued and 24 fouls were called.
Johnson (2-5, 1-3 AAC) struck first when Robert Platt netted his fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute. What initially looked like an insurance goal proved to be the game-winner, as Davide Sfondini scored in the 63rd minute.
SMC (1-6-1, 1-4-1 AAC) nearly cut into the lead moments later, with Max Charleston firing shots in the 65th and 66th minutes. The Pioneers eventually spoiled the shutout bid when Torres found the back of the net in the 87th minute. A last-second attempt for the equalizer was waved off when SMC was flagged for offsides.
Next up, the Pioneers host Pikeville on Saturday for Youth Day at Nash Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
