Pikeville, Kentucky - UPIKE scored the final nine points of the first quarter on its way to a 72-53 win over Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball on Monday night.
UPIKE (14-12, 13-5 AAC) erased an early 9-8 deficit behind four points apiece from Anika Stehbens and Rachel Bush. The duo combined for 31 of the Bears' 72 points in the victory. Jaaliyah Warren led all scorers with 20 points for the host Bears.
SMC (14-12, 9-10 AAC) was paced by a nine-point effort from Krystal Johnson, who also grabbed nine rebounds, while Shaelyn Hayes added nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the loss.
Johnson and the Pioneers rallied to cut the deficit to four, 23-19, late in the second quarter. The Bears responded with seven of the final 11 points of the opening half. UPIKE then opened the second half on an 11-2 run to halt the visiting Pioneers' comeback hopes.
SMC returns to action Wednesday for its final AAC regular-season matchup, hosting Johnson at 5:30 p.m. Students are reminded that it is a Blue Out, with free T-shirts available to the first 20 SMC students. Fans are also encouraged to bring canned goods to support The Bridge at Green Street as part of a food drive collection.
