SPARTANBURG, SC – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Johnson University, 9-1 in six innings in game one and 9-2 in game two on Saturday.
SMC (26-15, 9-13 AAC) was held to just one run and did not record a hit in the opening game. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Pioneers plated their lone run in the second. SMC loaded the bases with three walks before senior Jacie Ross was hit by a pitch to bring in the run.
Johnson (20-15, 11-6 AAC) extended its lead with two runs in the third, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth to secure the 9-1 victory. Royals starting pitcher Lindy Webber worked around eight walks while striking out eight to complete the no-hitter. Offensively, leadoff hitter Audrey Moorhouse led the way with a game-high three hits and two RBI.
In game two, Johnson used a four-run third inning to pull away for a 9-2 win. Despite the loss, Gracie Starnes recorded two of SMC's six hits and drove in both runs with a RBI double in the third and fifth innings.
The top three hitters in the Johnson lineup combined to go 7-for-13 in the win. Designated player Autumn Caywood went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Royals.
