SMC Men’s Track & Field Caps 2026 NAIA Championship Meet with All-American Honors and Historic Performances

SMC Men’s Track & Field Caps 2026 NAIA Championship Meet with All-American Honors and Historic Performances

ASHEVILLE, NC - Spartanburg Methodist College men's track & field concluded a standout showing at the 2026 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, highlighted by All-American honors from junior sprinter Romeo Brown and a strong national finish from distance standout junior Ryan Hunter, along with a competitive performance in the men's 4x100m relay.

Junior Romeo Brown (Newberry, S.C.) continued his emergence as one of the nation's top NAIA sprinters, earning All-American honors for the second time with a fifth-place finish in the 200m dash, clocking 21.11. Brown previously earned All-American recognition during the indoor season with a third-place finish, further solidifying a breakout year on the national stage.

He also competed in the 100m dash and contributed to the men's 4x100m relay, showcasing his versatility and consistency across multiple championship events.

"Romeo continues to elevate the standard for what we expect from championship-level performances at SMC," said head coach Jannai Maxwell. "What stands out isn't just his ability to compete at the highest level, but his consistency across multiple events and formats—indoor, outdoor, individual, and relay. Earning All-American honors again reflects his growth, discipline, and competitiveness on the national stage."

Junior Ryan Hunter (Inman, S.C.) capped his 2026 campaign with an 11th-place finish in the 5000m at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, posting a time of 14:58.68. Hunter delivered a historic season for the program, recording four sub-15:00 performances, a milestone never previously achieved in SMC program history. His breakthrough year established a new standard for the program in distance events.

"Ryan has completely redefined what is possible in our distance program," said assistant coach and distance coach Michael Johannes. "Breaking 15 minutes once is a milestone—he did it four times this season. His 11th-place finish at nationals is only part of the story; the consistency and standard he set every time he stepped on the track is what makes this year truly historic for him and for our program."

Reflecting on the season as a whole, head coach Maxwell emphasized the broader significance of the team's championship performances:

"This championship meet reflects the identity we've been building all season. Romeo delivering All-American performances indoors and outdoors, Ryan establishing a historic standard in the distance program across both cross country and track, and our 4x100m relay group stepping up on the national stage all speak to the depth and direction of this team. This was not an isolated success—it was the culmination of a season defined by accountability, development, and raising expectations across every event group. We are proud of what this group accomplished, and even more excited about where it positions us moving forward."
