Bio
Doug Smith is in his second season as head men’s soccer coach at Spartanburg Methodist College, where he has guided the program through a successful and competitive transition into NAIA and Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. Across two years, Smith has established SMC as a disciplined, ambitious, and upward-trending program built on player development, competitiveness, and academic excellence.
During the Pioneers’ first year in the AAC, Smith led the team to several historic milestones, including the program’s first-ever AAC Tournament berth, a five-match unbeaten streak, and the program’s first AAC victory, a 3–1 road win at Montreat. His squad finished with a top-five goals-against average in conference play and ranked among the top eight in goals, points, and shots, demonstrating rapid growth and strong identity in one of the NAIA’s toughest conferences.
Smith also developed the program’s first NAIA postseason award winners, including two Second Team All-AAC selections, the first all-conference honorees of SMC’s NAIA era. Senior goalkeeper Francesco Molinar earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors during the team’s postseason-clinching stretch, while freshman forward Anthoney Bedolla Menera delivered multiple game-winning contributions in his debut season.
Smith’s immediate impact began in his inaugural season, guiding SMC through its transition into NAIA competition in the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC). That year, he earned his first career win and the program’s first NAIA victory, a 1–0 result over Brewton-Parker. The season also featured standout performances from Molinar, who finished with 70 saves, and forward Brandon Porras, who earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Academically, Smith’s first team posted the eighth-highest GPA in the NAIA, produced 22 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll honorees, 8 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and 1 CSC Academic All-District selection.
Off the field, Smith has continued to elevate the program’s academic and cultural standards. In the AAC era, SMC produced 18 All-Academic selections and a Champion of Character award recipient, reflecting his focus on development, accountability, and excellence in all areas of the student-athlete experience.
Before taking over the program, Smith served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I USC Upstate and spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at SMC. A former sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, he brings a leadership philosophy grounded in discipline, resilience, and mentorship. Smith competed collegiately at Limestone University and Palomar College and holds a bachelor’s degree in Sports Coaching with a minor in Analytics from the United States Sports University.
Smith is recognized for building competitive, high-character teams, maximizing young talent, and laying strong foundations for long-term program success—qualities that define the continued rise of Spartanburg Methodist men’s soccer.
