Bio

Makayla Holcombe enters her fourth season as head coach of the Spartanburg Methodist College indoor and beach volleyball programs after guiding the Pioneers through one of the most successful transitional periods in program history. Since arriving in 2023, Holcombe has established a culture built on competitive excellence, servant leadership, academic achievement, and student-athlete development while leading both programs through the institution's transition from the NJCAA to the NAIA.

During the 2025 indoor season, Holcombe guided the Pioneers through their first year of competition in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), one of the NAIA's premier volleyball conferences. Facing a demanding conference slate and challenging nonconference schedule, SMC produced a balanced offensive attack with a .167 team hitting percentage while six student-athletes recorded at least 100 kills. Junior Hana Vucinic led the team with 222 kills and surpassed 1,000 career digs during the season.

The 2025 campaign was highlighted by several career milestones. Aurora Aho became the latest Pioneer to reach 1,000 career kills, while setters Tristan Craine and Brook Noe each eclipsed 1,000 career assists. Sophomore Braelynn Brewington earned Second Team All-Appalachian Athletic Conference honors, and senior Leilani Campbell represented Spartanburg Methodist as the program's Champions of Character recipient.

Holcombe's impact extends well beyond wins and losses. The indoor volleyball program finished the Spring 2026 semester with a 3.564 team GPA while producing four College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selections, 15 Academic All-AAC honorees, and 14 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, continuing one of the strongest academic traditions within the department.

On the sand, Holcombe led the beach volleyball program through one of the nation's most challenging schedules during the 2026 season, facing three teams ranked among the top 13 in the final NAIA postseason ratings. The Pioneers closed the season with a memorable 5-0 Senior Day victory over Brenau. Four student-athletes earned Academic All-Sun Conference honors, four were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and sophomore Rebekah Martin was recognized as the Sun Conference Champions of Character recipient.

In 2024, Holcombe continued building the program's momentum during Spartanburg Methodist's first year of NAIA competition. Makinnley Smart earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention North Central Region recognition while also receiving First Team All-Continental Athletic Conference honors. Brantlie Price joined Smart on the conference's First Team, while Aurora Aho, Leilani Campbell, and Kendall Meinders each earned Second Team All-Conference recognition. The Pioneers advanced to the Continental Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals and posted an impressive 7-2 record inside Bridges Arena.

The beach volleyball program narrowly missed qualifying for the Sun Conference Tournament in 2024 but continued to excel academically. Bailey Beck, Brantlie Price, and Hana Vucinic were named Academic All-Sun Conference selections, while Beck also earned the conference's Champions of Character Award. Both the indoor and beach volleyball programs were recognized nationally with the AVCA Team Academic Award, reflecting Holcombe's commitment to excellence in the classroom.

Holcombe made an immediate impact during her inaugural season in 2023, leading the Pioneers to a 21-14 overall record and a perfect 11-0 mark in Region X competition. Spartanburg Methodist advanced to the NJCAA Atlantic District A Championship while four student-athletes—Aurora Aho, Kendall Meinders, Tayla Reini, and Hana Vucinic—earned NJCAA All-Region honors. Aho was named Conference Player of the Year, while Holcombe was recognized as Conference Coach of the Year following her first season at the helm.

Prior to arriving at Spartanburg Methodist, Holcombe spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Columbia International University, where she helped oversee one of the NAIA's premier volleyball programs. During her tenure, the Rams compiled a remarkable 72-18 overall record while capturing two Appalachian Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships, one AAC Tournament Championship, making two NAIA National Tournament appearances, and winning the NCCAA National Championship. She also helped develop numerous award-winning student-athletes, including an AAC Setter of the Year, AAC Freshman of the Year, AAC Tournament MVP, NCCAA Player of the Year, and an NAIA First Team All-American.

Before joining Columbia International, Holcombe served as a graduate assistant at Keiser University, helping the Seahawks capture two Sun Conference Regular Season Championships, a conference tournament title, and an NAIA National Tournament appearance while gaining valuable experience at one of the nation's premier NAIA volleyball programs.

A native of Nebraska, Holcombe played collegiately at Garden City Community College before completing her bachelor's degree in Recreation, Wellness and Sport with a minor in Coaching at Chowan University. She later earned a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Keiser University. Her impact on the profession has also been recognized nationally as an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 Award recipient.
