Columbia, S.C. – A nine-run fifth inning led host CIU to a 9-0 win over Spartanburg Methodist College on Tuesday.
The Rams (22-16) avenged a 10-2 loss on February 10, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs on six hits in the fifth inning. Five of the nine runs came with one out for CIU. Among the six hits were a pair of two-RBI singles by Tai Williams and Kai Smith.
CIU starter Matthew Garris went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out two to earn the win.
The Pioneers (15-23) were limited to four hits by three CIU pitchers. Among those four hits was a double by Thatcher Baughman, the only extra-base hit for SMC.
Next, SMC will host Brewton-Parker College for a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. at Mooneyham Field.
