SMC Baseball Loses to Cumberland, 18-5

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An eight-run first inning by visiting Cumberland led the visiting Phoenix to an 18-5 win over host Spartanburg Methodist College on Sunday.
13 batters went to plate in the opening inning as they scored eight runs on four hits for the early lead on its way to the victory. The top three in the Cumberland order set the table on the day, going 9-for-13 in the win with sixth runs scored and nine RBI. Leadoff batter Drew Dalton-Akiwumi went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Spartanburg Methodist was also led by its leadoff batter, Jarian Pinckney, who went 3-for-4 and a run scored. Elijah Franz, who was making his first start of the season at third, made an immediate impact with a 2-for-3 afternoon with a pair of RBI. Dario Astudillo and Chance Greene each hit solo home runs in the loss.
After falling behind 8-0 in the first, SMC plated a pair in the second, the Phoenix plated four each in the third and seventh to go along with a pair in the fifth in the win. SMC also scored twice in the fifth and one in the sixth for the final margin.
Next, SMC will travel to face local rival Montreat on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a single game.
