Houston Smith joined the Spartanburg Methodist College men's basketball program as an assistant coach in the summer of 2026.

Smith brings experience from the NCAA Division I, prep, and high school levels, with a strong background in player development, recruiting, scouting, and program operations.

Prior to joining the Pioneers, Smith spent the 2025-26 season at Southeastern Prep, serving as an assistant coach for the nationally recognized national team while leading the program's postgraduate team as head coach. He played an integral role in practice planning, game management, recruiting, and individual player development, helping mentor several of the nation's premier prospects, including ESPN-ranked recruits Beckham Black, CJ Rosser, Obinna Ezezie, Jaxson Richardson, Toni Bryant, and Obinna Ezezie.

Before his time at Southeastern Prep, Smith was a graduate assistant coach at Mercer University during the 2024-25 season. Working with the NCAA Division I Bears, he assisted with on-court instruction, player development, recruiting operations, opponent scouting, scheduling, academic oversight, and video analysis utilizing Synergy and SportsCode.

Smith also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Columbus Africentric High School in Columbus, Ohio, where he helped guide the Nubians to consecutive Ohio Division III Final Four appearances in 2021 and 2022. In addition to his varsity responsibilities, he served as head coach of the school's middle school team, leading the program to a 16-1 record and a league championship.

A former collegiate standout, Smith played four seasons at Bethune-Cookman University, where he was a three-year team captain and helped lead the Wildcats to the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season championship. Prior to his collegiate career, he competed for All-Ohio Red on the Nike EYBL circuit.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Bethune-Cookman University.
