Michael Johannes is entering his second season as Assistant Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Spartanburg Methodist College, where he works alongside head coach Jannai Maxwell in developing one of the NAIA's emerging programs. Since joining the Pioneer staff in 2025, Johannes has played an integral role in the continued growth of the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs, helping student-athletes achieve success at the conference and national levels while establishing new program standards. 

Distance standout Ryan Hunter had a breakout junior season under Johannes' guidance by qualifying for both the NAIA Cross Country Championships and the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Hunter earned AAC Runner of the Week honors twice during the cross country season before finishing eighth at the AAC Championships to receive Second Team All-AAC recognition and qualify for the NAIA National Championships, where he placed 72nd nationally. During track season, Hunter finished 11th nationally in the 5,000 meters while earning All-Conference honors with runner-up finishes in both the outdoor 5,000- and 10,000-meter races and a third-place finish in the indoor 5,000 meters.

Johannes also helped oversee tremendous team-wide development throughout the 2025-26 season. The Pioneer men's program established nine outdoor school records and six indoor records while producing multiple All-Conference performances. 

In cross country, Johannes helped lead a women's squad that entered the season needing to replace three NAIA national qualifiers. Despite the challenge, the Pioneers continued to make measurable progress, recording three personal-best performances at the AAC Championships. Anna Altman was recognized as the team's Champion of Character recipient while also earning a place on the AAC All-Academic Team. Throughout the season, the Pioneers competed against nationally respected fields at the Appalachian Challenge, the USC Upstate Invitational, and the Live in Lou Classic.

Academically, the program continued to excel alongside its competitive success. Hunter and four teammates earned recognition on the AAC All-Academic Team, reflecting the coaching staff's commitment to developing student-athletes who thrive both in competition and in the classroom.

Prior to arriving at Spartanburg Methodist, Johannes began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Bob Jones University during the 2020-21 season before serving in additional collegiate coaching roles that strengthened his expertise in athlete development, distance training, recruiting, and program operations.
