Men's Soccer Falls short to Cape Fear CC in Double OT

Spartanburg SC - SMC Men's Soccer falls to Cape Fear CC, 3-2 in double OT due to own goal.

Despite a rough start from both teams the Pioneers fought back to take a 2-1 lead at half time.

"The majority of the first half was a struggle for us, We seemed to not click as much as we did in the Patrick Henry game." says Head Soccer Coach Kyle Hughes.

After taking the lead before half time the Pioneers controlled much of the second half up until the last ten minutes of the game.

"I was not comfortable with the 2-1 lead against Cape Fear's strong attack. We pressed them to get another goal to give to us some cushion but gave up a late goal at the end of the second half."

The game remained close throughout both periods of overtime. However, with just a few minutes left in the second overtime Pioneer defender Parker Malone miss hit a driven cross from the Sea Devils into his own net.

"On the day, I felt we started slow but controlled the game well into the overtime periods. We simply just could not finish. I thought the game would end in a tie but the mistake with the own goal led to Cape Fear CC walking away with the win."

The Pioneers will play next on September 5th, where they will face Louisburg College at 4pm.
